Effective Immediately, the following are membership standards to keep in good standing

  1. Participation in 12 home county ARES/RACES training nets per year. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th Monday of the month the Waukesha County ARES/RACES holds a radio net on our main repeater frequency. All you need to do is check in 12 times a year.

  2. Participation in one ARES/RACES activation (Skywarn, and Public Service events are fine) per year. You will have plenty of opportunities to participate, but you must participate in at least one event anually.

  3. Attend one ARES/RACES meeting per year. Waukesha County ARES meets at the Waukesha EOC the first Tuesday of every month.

  4. Send one NTS radiogram per year indicating the member is still interested in retaining membership. This does not have to be on the air, it can be through e-mail or Winlink 2000, etc., but it must be in NTS format.

  5. Be a contributor to the team in the eyes of the EC (subjective, but important).

  6. Attend Skywarn training at least once every two years. Skywarn is also known as weather spotting. Every two years you will be required to take a free 1hour class about weather. Even if weather is not your thing, you will find this informational!

  7. Completion of ICS-100 and IS-700 courses. This requirement is probably one of the most important. As a RACES organization, we work closely with local government agencies. The ICS courses are actually FEMA courses. As you would imagine, understanding how to interact with local government agencies is extremely important. Completing these 2 courses gives you the foundation you need.

You can view the requirements here at the Wisconsin ARES / RACES web site.

The ICS-100 and IS-700 courses are free. The courses are open to the public, and you do not have to be an amateur radio operator. You will be required to complete the courses within a few months of membership.

The courses are web based. They consist of web presentations, followed up with a test. If you want, you can complete both tests in one afternoon. You will receive PDF certificates of your completion (downloaded from the web). Email these certs to our Emergency Coordinator, Larry Noldan (NZ9I).
